Simplifying the mechanic

Prototype to Final
Ignotus
Created as our Capstone project and showcased at XP Summit 2022, Ignotus is a 3D puzzle-platformer where the player can heat and cool objects to change their state.
Tools Used
Unity Engine, C#, Notion, Sourcetree, Blender, Substance Painter
Role and Responsibilities
Designer, Programmer, Artist - group project.
My role on this project was to design the primary heating/cooling mechanic in addition to prototype creation. As the project progressed I transitioned to animation and programming support to help balance team workload.
Takeaways
The key takeaway I got from Ignotus is it doesn't matter how cool your mechanic sounds or looks if players can't understand it. The initial mechanic pitches were complex and detailed, but the more we iterated on them the more we realized the complexity was too large for the sale of the game we were making. Through multiple iterations we managed to simplify the main mechanics to something enjoyable and fun in addition to increasing our player communication so that the mechanic was more accessible.
