Sheridan College: Talk about process and takeaways

Design Presentation

Day Planner Prototype

The Day Planner Prototype won first place in Ubisoft Toronto's 2019 Future Women in Games competition (now Develop at Ubisoft). It challenged players to place different shapes in a schedule to meet a set of goals before time runs out.

Tools Used

Unity Engine, C#, Adobe Photoshop, Trello

Role and Responsibilities

Designer, programmer - Individual project

Created the project in multiple stages following the competition brief and criteria.

Stage 1: Initial pitch paragraph, outlining the base concept and intentions.

Stage 2: Design solution presentation, full paper design and plan for the prototype.

Stage 3: Final submission from paper prototype to completed digital version. Included bi-weekly check-ins with a mentor and addressing mentor feedback.

Takeaways

The Day Planner Prototype taught me the importance of having a proper design process with documentation. Having a clear set of player experience goals helped inform design decisions and solidified the direction of the prototype. Paper prototyping saved time in the long run by allowing quick iterations in a short time period. The Day Planner Prototype also taught me how to stick to a tight production schedule with deadlines and about the importance of leaving buffer time to iterate on a design.

Most importantly, the Day Planner Prototype was my official start in the games industry, without it I wouldn't be where I am today.
